And the fines you could face if you break the rules

The United Arab Emirates has warned social media users against creating images generated by artificial intelligence.

Announced on Thursday September 25 by the UAE Media Council, the AI warning outlines that improper use of image generation tools is a clear legal violation of media content standards.

In a statement released via the Emirates News Agency, the council highlighted that using AI or other modern tools to depict national symbols or public figures without prior official approval is illegal.

The UAE Media Council also warned that any use of AI to spread misinformation, incite hate speech, defame others, undermine their dignity or reputation or attack societal values and principles is considered a media offence.

Media offences are subject to the provisions of the Media Violations Regulation, which includes fines and administrative penalties.

These rules will apply not only to media companies but also to social media users and content creators.

The UAE Media Council called on all affected to fully comply with the laws and approved standards, while upholding professional and ethical responsibility.
